How to Measure Your Girth for the Proper Fit

(And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Your horse can't tell you the girth hurts. But they're showing you — in the pinned ears at tacking up, the short stride after mounting, the "bloating"  when the girth goes on, not being able to pick up the correct lead, and behavioural issues. Girth fit is one of the most overlooked pieces of the puzzle, and getting it right can change everything about how your horse moves and feels under saddle.

Here's how to measure for proper fit, what that fit should actually look and feel like, and why so many riders are switching to the Tapestry Comfort Girth once they understand what's been missing.

How to Measure Your Girth

1. Start with a properly fitted saddle. Girth fit begins with saddle fit — if your saddle isn't sitting correctly, no girth will compensate for it. Tack up as you normally would before measuring.

2. Measure end of girth-buckle to end of girth-buckle. If your current girth fits properly (more on this below) measure your girth with a tape measure. You don't want to order the stamped size as all girths stretch out. 

3. Check the point of the elbow. This is the part most riders skip, and it's the one that matters most. Watch where the girth sits relative to your horse's elbow as they move. A horse's elbow rotates back with every stride, and if the girth crowds that point, you'll see rubbing, girthiness, or a shortened stride — even with a girth that's technically "the right size." In a dressage/monoflap girth or cinch the buckles should sit at least 3-4" above the post of the elbow. A longer girth or cinch also helps to stabilize the saddle.

4. Confirm with the two-finger rule. Once the girth is buckled snugly, you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the girth and your horse's side, all the way around. Snug, not tight. If you can't get two fingers in, size up or check your billets.

5. Re-check after a few minutes of movement. Horses often need a second girth-check once they've warmed up and their barrel has settled. A girth that felt right standing in the crossties can feel very different at the trot.

What's Actually Under The Girth

It helps to understand what the girth is lying against, because it isn't just skin and muscle — it's a surprisingly busy stretch of anatomy.

Right under the girth's path sits the cutaneus trunci, the thin sheet of skin muscle responsible for that shiver-and-twitch reflex you see when a fly lands on your horse's barrel. It's wired to react to pressure and irritation. Vets researching girthiness point to this muscle directly: horses that pin ears, bite, or brace against the girth may be reacting to pain or irritation from compression of this muscle and the structures beneath it, not just being difficult.

Running along the girth line itself is the external thoracic vein, often called the "spur vein" by horsemen — a large, visible vessel just under the skin that most riders learn to recognize by sight. Nearby, the lateral thoracic vein and artery supply the same region. None of these sit deep; they're close enough to the surface that a girth riding too far forward or pinching at the wrong angle can genuinely compress them.

Then there's sensation itself: the lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves — the nerves that run between each rib — surface through the chest wall right in the girth area and split off to supply feeling to the skin exactly where the girth sits. This is why a horse can feel a poorly placed girth with real precision, not just general discomfort.

And at the elbow point specifically, where a straight, rigid girth does the most damage, the ulnar nerve and its collateral vessels pass close to the surface. It's the same region that gives horses (and people) that sharp "funny bone" sensitivity — which is exactly why crowding this spot with unforgiving material produces such an outsized reaction: pinned ears, biting, kicking out, or a stride that shortens the instant you sit down. What Proper Fit Actually Looks Like

A properly fitted girth should be invisible — in the best sense. Your horse should tack up without pinning ears, biting, or holding their breath. Under saddle, proper fit means:

  • No rubbing or hair loss behind the elbow, even after regular work
  • A free, uninhibited stride from the very first steps after mounting
  • No bloating or breath-holding when the girth is tightened
  • Consistent, correct canter leads without unexplained resistance
  • A horse that stands quietly for tacking up instead of dancing in the cross-ties

If any of those signs are showing up — even occasionally — it's worth looking at the girth before anything else. So many riders chase saddle fit, dental issues, or soundness problems without ever ruling out the one piece of tack that sits directly over the most sensitive, mobile part of the horse's body.
